How to Have a Project Manager Job and Choose Your Own Hours
Individual circumstances change all the time. What was once the ideal job with a 30 minute commute and set hours can become difficult once you have a child. Even once your child goes to school you still need to be able to pick them up from the school gate. We are seeing more and more that what people want is to have flexible working. Working when the kids are at school or in bed. Unfortunately, most companies are either unwilling or unable to give this flexibility.
The result is people end up having a career break. Or they end up leaving the project management profession. This then has a major impact on both income now and income in the future. It can be very hard to get back in after a period of absence.
But it does not have to be this way. With how connected we have all become with the internet. It is now easier than ever to make video calls. With the right technology, it is possible to work as a project manager at home. The way to do this is to become a freelance virtual project manager.
If you do this you will be able to work the number of hours you want and at times that suit your lifestyle. Want to work when the children are at school but still be at the school gates to pick them up? Do you want to continue working as a professional project manager? As a freelance virtual project manager, you can.
For me, I stumbled across freelance virtual project manager roles by chance. I was reading an article about the gig economy which was all about how people become freelancers. I thought this is great if you can make something. I was thinking freelance meant writing or designing a logo for someone. Then further down it mentioned that people are looking for freelance project managers. The problem was small companies needed project management help. They could not afford to hire a full-time project manager so were looking for part time project managers. They wanted a project manager for 5 to 10 hours per week to help them get stuff done.
I decided to investigate and registered myself as a freelance project manager. After a week I saw an advert for a part time project manager and applied. Then on Sunday of the same week, I spotted the advert a job offer came in and I became a freelance project manager. Awesome. So I started looking for my next freelance virtual project manager job. It is a great way to have lots of variety. By having a few contracts on the go I have flexible well-paid work. I am enjoying my time as a freelance virtual project manager. It is a great lifestyle and I wish I had discovered it sooner.
Where to Find People that Want to Hire You
Upwork which was once called Odesk has also purchased Elance. It is a site based in the United States of America so all payments are in US Dollars. I have found this site to have the most amount of freelance virtual project manager jobs. The site is free to use and set up an account the way they make their money is by taking 20% of the money that you earn. They also charge a fee to the people posting the jobs. The thing to remember is when you apply for a job on Upwork add 20% to your cost. The good thing is when you do apply for a role it is very clear how much you will earn after deduction of the Upwork fees. I have found Upwork to be well run and the site is easy to use.
PeoplePerHour is based in Europe but the currency is set by the client. This site does not have as many freelance virtual project manager jobs as Upwork at the moment. The jobs that I have found on PeoplePerHour are of a high quality. It is a site that is worth checking on a regular basis. The site is very well set up and is also easy to use. This site also takes a fee but does make it clear how much they will deduct from your earnings. I have also found that this a good site when you are new as they provide a refund guarantee for anyone that hires you. This is definitely a site you need to check on a regular basis.
Freelancer is an Australian site so the currency is often in Australian dollars. This is a site that is one to watch but unlike the two above you will need to pay some money to secure the jobs. While the site is free to use some jobs expect you to have passed the freelancer courses. These courses are basic language courses that Freelancer charge you to take. The fees are small so if you think you will get a contract through this site then they are worth doing. The jobs on here I have found to not be as high quality as PeoplePerHour. Also, there are not as many freelance virtual project manager jobs as you will find on Upwork. I still recommend you keep an eye on this site for the odd good job that comes along.
Why I don’t use Fiverr
There are other sites where you can secure freelancer virtual project jobs. But these sites operate in a different way. The three sites I recommend work by people posting jobs and then you apply for them. Other sites such as Fiverr, you have to create an advert and then people who find your advert will then hire you. The challenge is when you are starting out it is difficult to make your advert stand out. Other adverts have high review scores so are more likely to secure the jobs. So I spend my time and energy on the sites where people post the jobs and you apply for them.
In summary, regardless of your reason why you want to have flexible working, there is a solution. You do not need to take a career break or move away from the project management profession. You can work hours that suit you or earn some extra cash as a freelance virtual project manager. There are 3 very good sites where you can find freelance virtual project manager jobs.
